October 29th, 1998 Review

This review is from Harry/Sheepy

After school on Thursday the 29th of October, my mum picked us up and took us to the Sydney Entertainment Center. Actually, no, she didn't. She had to get some work done first, and took ages, so after purchasing a camera, we arrived at the Ent. Center at 4:15pm. From there we located the backstage, and then went to buy some McDonalds.

When we returned to the backstage area, we met a girl, Charlene, who had met Kyle whilst we had been buying our McDonalds (my mondo infuriation towards McDonalds's continues to this day). Anyway, Charlene showed us her signed 3am single, and we waited in anticipation for them to come out before the show, but there was no such luck. We waited 2 hours and 45 minutes, and the only people who came out in that period of time was a very unfriendly security guard named Boris (I mean what kind of a name is Boris?) and Hanson's security guy Jason. Don't ask me how I know that bit of trivia. A lady involved in making the video also gave us cigarette lighters so we could wave them around in the slow songs.

After a while, Boris (the security guard) advised us that we better go inside the Ent Center and get in line because the doors would be opening soon. We had door 2 tickets, so we waited out there for an hour (Boris misinformed us again…) and when the doors finally opened, we used my infamous "run and push" method to get the best space possible. We got in the second row, standing! Yeah!

The Feelers came on first. They rocked! I made a mental note to buy their CD at a later date. I have done so. Some people in the audience were not very friendly, and they were all "Boo, Feelers. Yay, Matchbox20". There was another ˝ hour wait before Matchbox 20 came on. A guy from Triple M (radio station) came out and said that they had cameras and stuff to tape this concert for the up and coming video (which I believe is out now, but not here). When Matchbox 20 came on, Charlie made the observation that the curtain went out or off, but not up. We were standing up, so I could not keep a record of the song order, but they played pretty much everything off the album, and some covers as well.

The highlight of the concert part of the night was when Rob had to go get his guitar fixed, so Adam entertained the audience with his rendition of that rap song the granny sings in the Wedding Singer. I think Adam also had a problem with staring – he kept on staring at people in the audience while he played.

Charlie had a camera, and thankfully enough, Concert Security did not take it off her. However, some disgruntled woman in the audience was pretty peeved with Charlie for taking photos. Nobody knows why. Might I also say that I fell in love with a security guard, who let me take really good photos without telling me off.

Matchbox20 ended off with Long Day, and as soon as that was over, we again put the "run and push" method into practise to get back to the backstage. We got a good spot, and waited. A lot of people wanted to borrow pens from me to get autographs. I have a lot of pens in different colours and brands and shapes, so I guess that's why, anyway, to quote zindo, I digress. After waiting quite a while, that idiot from Triple M came out again and was all "Do you want to see Matchbox 20?" and everyone was like "YEAHHH!" and he was like "I can't hear you!" I hate it when people use that stupid line, why can't they hear the people shouting? They should just say "Shout louder!" Anyway, the Triple M man tells us that Matchbox 20 are just in the corridor in the backstage, so everyone at the backstage area (no more than 70 I would say) is saying "wooo!" and then they come out!

Of course, by the time they get to us I am a bit stupid.

Adam comes first, signs 2 autographs for us and I profess my love for him. Kyle and Rob come out together. I'm sorry but Kyle was not very talkative to us. Rob is lovely and we have a bit of a chat with him. Paul was really sweet too. Brian was funny except when we were trying to get him to sign an autograph for our friend Sarah, and he was like "WHAT? How many have you got in there?" And he grabs our paper and he's flipping through it. We gave him distressed stares and he said he was only joking and signed another one for us.

We managed to salvage a guitar pick from Adam, which was a highlight of the night. Said guitar pick is now in my cupboard in a box with other things from the night, including the ticket and the cigarette lighter we got from the video woman and such. I came to the conclusion that Adam was maybe the nicest one? Ahhh. But that's just me.

Anyway, they had to leave after they had stayed maybe 1 + hours? They got into 2 white Taragos, Rob and Marisol in the back seat of one (woo baby). Extremely pleased with what we had got, we went to get a taxi, only to have a mean taxi driver who almost wouldn't take us home because we were a tad bit happy. When we did get back home we wrote a review which I have now typed up and edited phrases which were cool for me a year ago into phrases that are cool for me now. My concert photos can be seen at various MB20 pages of the Internet and my own page from time to time.

Hope this was sufficiently entertaining, Love, Harry.
