August 7th, 1998 Review

This review is submitted by our very own Fjord!

Well, y'all don't wanna know about the two-hour drive over, cuz it was pretty boring. Hehe.. When I got there my dad parked the car and asked one of the traffic-guys for directions. And then I went up to the gates of the arts center and asked the lady where to go. She told me to the back of this big line of people, so I did. There were tons of people there, and I saw one girl with the coolest mb20 shirt. We got up to the gates finally and after they searched my bag and took my ticket they let me in.

I went to the other side of the fountain for a bit (I didn't go to the side that had a stage with a band, cuz there were already a lot of people there). I waited there for a bit, but since I still had half an hour before I was supposed to meet Kat at 7:00, I went and checked out my seat first. It was a pretty good seat. I could see the whole stage and I was the next to first seat in my row. I watched the sound check people checking the sound on Semisonic's equipment for a while, and then I went back to the fountain at 10 minutes to 7:00.

I stayed on the side away from the stage, but there were still a lot of people there!! I realized I should've asked Kat what she looked like, or told her what I looked like, but it was too late now. I guessed I'd just have to ask people. So when it was like 5 to 7:00 I started to ask around. I asked a bunch of people that were milling around aimlessly, since I was sure that the ones who went right up the stairs or were already with someone else weren't Kat. Most of them were like 'uh, no, sorry', but this one girl I asked last said "NO" rudely and told me I should have a sign or something instead of bothering people.. grr.. After that I was kind of scared to ask anyone else, so I didn't.

I waited around beside the fountain for a while.. I was sure kat was looking for me but I didn't know where to look, and I didn't want to ask anyone else. They'd closed up the gates that led up to the stairs, so when I finally left the fountain, I had to walk all the way around and through. Semisonic started playing just about when I got in my seat, or maybe they'd been playing for a while. They were doing this song called 'Never Mind' or somethin'. Anyway, they were okay, and when they were finished the sound check people came out and started setting up for Soul Asylum. That took forever!

Finally, Soul Asylum came out and they played a LOT of songs. I was waiting for mb20. These people in front of me had this really cool book full of pictures of mb20, and I hung over their shoulders looking at it. Finally Soul Asylum was over, and they put the curtain down and started setting up for MB20. Some people left during that, and some people went to get food or something, but I was afraid I'd miss it so I stayed in my seat!!

Finally the curtain came up; just before that they'd been having smoke machines and doing the lights and I could see a little bit of it through the side of the curtain. I think I saw Kyle walk by. The curtain came up and there was Rob!! Wearing a blue shirt and black pants..and I could see Adam and Kyle. Adam had on a great print shirt and there was Brian in I think light blue shirt. All I could see of Paul was the top of his head, and the BRIGHT RED hair! lol! All people stood up, myself included, and we were screaming and clapping. When they started playing "Argue" I was dancing to it (in the tiny row between seats) and singing at the top of my lungs. It was AMAZING!!! Then they did "Girl Like That" and "Damn" and all the other songs on the cd, (including "Hang" on acoustic guitars.. woohoo!.. and Kyle sang the first chorus I believe!!)

I knew all the lyrics and sang and danced. But the people next to me didn't and sat down. I felt really special, and I was jumping up and down in the, 'but outside.. it stops rainiiiing...' part of "3am" and other songs too; and singing so loud and looking really strange I'll bet. But hey, I knew all the lyrics! And these people next to me didn't even know what song it was when they started playing "Shame"!!! Yeah, I felt really special!!!

Well, all the songs from the cd were incredible. When they did "Busted" I was practically frothing at the mouth as I sung. I guess the man next to me thought I was crazy, cuz he moved away, lmfao. Oh, well.

In between songs, I was clapping so hard my hands hurt and jumping up and down and screaming. I was so excited!! I knew I wasn't gonna be able to get to meet them by then, cuz I had lost kat (hehe) and I had no idea where to go anyway. But still, I was having an incredible time!!

They also did "Tired" and all the people next to me were like, 'what's that?' and I was singing and dancing to it and they were looking at me like they wondered how I knew it. It was the same for when they did "You And I And I," which was WONDERFUL! I'd never heard it before, but I knew the lyrics cuz I got them from Michael's page. Once I realized which song it was I could sing it. They did another song I didn't recognize, but I pretended to. lol. I couldn't let the people next to me down; they thought I knew all the songs!!! "Long Day" was great with those little bits of other songs in the middle. I loved it!

The curtain came down and people left, including the people next to me. I was still jumping up and down and clapping and yelling, cuz I knew it wasn't over until they played "long day." And then the curtains drew back and there was Rob with his acoustic guitar and he says how this girl Kate (that was kat!! woohooo kat!!) asked him to play this song. And he said he wrote it a really, 'f*ckin long time ago.' And then he started playing and I said, 'Oh my God, "Dear Joan"!!!' and I started jumping down and shrieking my head off, and then I started singing it with him and it was sooo damn beautiful! Then it was "Long Day" and then the concert was over.

Rob ran along the front of the stage with his hand down for people touch, which was way cool. Then they all left, but Paulio came along the front so you could get a look at him before he left, and I screamed at him and jumped up and down some more, but he didn't notice. Then all people stampeded for the exits, and I had to go too or get stepped on. Everyone was coming out toward me, and I ran. But we got caught up in this huge mob and people were pushing me and this one guy shoved me aside and said, 'If we all walked faster we could get out of here.' I was really freakin mad. A woman started singing "Push" next to me and I thought that was really funny.

Finally we got out, and then I found my dad's car and got in and fell asleep. I dreamed that Rob was singing "Dear Joan" again but he forgot the lyrics. So someone else in the audience and I were singing them too him, and he looked at us and smiled real big.

And that was it!! My concert was over. I was REALLY sad cuz I didn't get to give them my stuff, like the bday cards for Paul and Kyle which I really wanted to, and the stuff for kitten I said I'd give them. But the concert was unbelievable and I had a fantastic time. But the best of the whole thing was when they did "Dear Joan"..
