Alicia's September 29, 2001 Review

I tried really hard to win this breakfast thing from a station here that they were doing with Matchbox Twenty. They were supposed to play some songs and talk with fans. I was even more because they didn’t play it on the radio. I woke up at 4:30 just so I could check the station, and they never played it.

We got to Criket Pavilion at around 6:10. I went and bought a shirt and a poster. Then we went over and watched Peter Stuart, who is awesome. I ended up buying his record. He also signed it for me. He asked someone to name a topic and he’d make up a song right there. Someone said like, so he made up a new version of Like a Virgin about Britney Spears. He sang how Britney was like a virgin like Phoenix was like Alaska. He also said her boyfriend looked like Screech. I was laughing so hard!

Our seats were 15 rows back, dead center. I brought my binoculars (even though we were close) for all the good details. Mainly so I could stare at Kyle’s butt up-close, and watch the faces he makes. But they were very helpful. My mom now has a thing for the bass player of Train!

Pete Yorn came on at 7. He was okay. It was hard to understand what he was saying so I couldn’t really get into it. But I did like the music. I could see Rob and Mari in the background.

I don’t remember what time Train came on. They were awesome. I only knew a few songs, but still enjoyed myself. Kyle came out to play the Led Zepplin cover with them. Very cool! Pat kept talking about how they knew MB20 was going to do something because they always did at the end of the tour. He told us not to support whatever they did. Of course, everyone was just screaming the whole time. It was funny! Train is awesome live. I liked them a lot. Rob and Mari, and I think Paul and Adam watched them for a while by the side. Rob came out and played those little drums with Pat for a few minutes. His hair was flying everywhere!

Loved the Michael Jackson song before they came out. I felt like I was in Old Navy! When the band walked on, they were playing a remix of Crutch that was really cool. They had that part where Kyle goes “Yeah-yeah” playing over and over again. Then they opened with Crutch. I don’t remember the set list, but someone on here probably knows. They played Remedy and All Along the Watchtower for covers. They did a lot of neat intros to some songs (can’t remember which ones right now, think one was Rest Stop.) You couldn’t tell what the song was going to be, but it was awesome! They did a long “rocking out” session during Black & White People. I started crying when they played this song, especially when all the GDers put up signs for Colbee.

Rob played Recollection Phoenix solo. When the guitar tech came out to give him the guitar, he tripped and broke the guitar. He meant to though. Rob gave out the neck to one person and the body to someone else. Wish I could have been in the front row! Rob told us the story behind the song. He said when they were touring in ’98, he was on the bus pulling out of Phoenix. He was in a funk and just wrote the song. Mari told him that it sounded like a Willie Nelson song, and now it is! It’s one of my new favorites. Can’t wait until the CD comes out.

On top of the piano, they had a gnome that was lit up holding an American flag. It looked like a rocket from far away. During Mad Season, Rob got the camera out he taped himself. He also taped Kyle’s fingers during his solo. At the end of the song, when Kyle adds that part in, Rob was twirling the camera around by the cord. I thought it was going to fly off!

Kyle was wearing a white wife beater, black jeans, and black boots. Rob had on blue jeans and a Van Halen shirt. Paul was wearing a red shirt and jeans with his usual bandana over his hair (his hair is really getting long!) Pookie had on leather pants and either a blue or green button down shirt. Adam was wearing a maroon shirt and I think black pants. Ben had on a no sleeve shirt that was purple on the top and white on the bottom.

Peter came on during Last Beautiful Girl and the covers. He changed after his was playing by the side. He was wearing pajamas and not just any pajamas either, but Paul Frank ones that were covered with monkeys. I was laughing so hard when I saw that. He had a shirt underneath that I saw later that matched them. He also had on Paul’s (I think it’s his) cowboy hat from Bent. He was so funny up there, doing little dances. He cracks me up!

Rob had Doug come out and do a little dance for us. He said that on the last day of every tour they had to have Dancing Doug come out. It was so funny! Rob also had the whole crew come out to thank them all for taking them around the world for so long and taking care of them. He said some of them had been with them so long that they had taught them how to be on the road. He also said that their crew was going to go flirt with other bands now! Moon came out too and was clapping for everyone.

After Black & White People (I think), Pat came out and got on the microphone. He said since MB20 had just given Train little “gifts” that they wanted to give them back one too. So he gets the help of Teo and Dion to play stripper music. And out comes this guy dressed as a cop, stripping down to his g-string. I was laughing so hard. The faces on the guys were priceless. Plus that “cop” had a pretty hot body!

That’s all the details I can remember right now. I know I went on forever, but it was awesome! They really rocked hard last night. I might not make it to the next concert from with drawl!
