Matchbox Twenty is in St. Louis for a show at the Savvis Center on March 21st, 2001. We (Mary, Tim and I) make it to the Savvis around 6:00 and sign up to win front row tickets, which of course we didn't win. Our seats were really good though anyways, the first section off to the side of the stage (on Kyle's side) about 20 rows up.
While we were waiting to hear who won, we checked out security because Mary and I both had cameras with us, and I had a recorder as well. Well, security was checking people pretty good, patting down, even patting the back, and checking bags. So, Mary and I returned to the car to put the cameras back, but I was bound and determined to get my recorder in, so I shoved it down the back of my pants (if I were to sit down, I would have smashed the recorder...lol) Thank goodness I had on semi-loose pants and a long shirt and jacket to cover my butt! We go in and they pat me down and check my purse, and the girl says "You're fine" and I'm thinking "If you only knew..."
So, Lifehouse starts at 7:00 and they were really good, all except the like 4th song that almost put me to sleep. Then around 7:45 Everclear comes on, and they were pretty good, even though all their songs sound the same to me. (I was singing "Father of Mine" to every song...lol). When they had the "Everclear Dancers" (people picked from the audience) come on though it was really funny because this one guy up there was obviously getting on Art's nerves, and Art threw the guys hat out to the crowd and after the dancers left the stage he said "I thought that guy was going to have his way with me right up here!" Very funny!
The moment we long awaited for...it's about 9:05 or so and the lights go off for Matchbox Twenty! They start off with "Crutch" and then "Bent," and then "Argue" where they broke it down and Rob talked to the crowd a bit. Then they played "Girl Like That" which Rob said was about everyone’s ex at one time or another. Then they played "Last Beautiful Girl" which Rob said wasn't about anything really, it was just a song to bop your head to as he did a cute little dance move. Then they played "Burn" and then "Long Day" which they did a different but cool intro to. Next was "You Won't be Mine" where Rob sat in on the piano and he told the crowd he had something going on in his chest, but he was gonna play through it like it wasn't there. (Awww.) Then while they still had the "Cocktail lounge thing" (as Rob called it) going on, they played "Rest Stop," but not before Rob gave a nice little 5 minute speech about what the song was about. He drew the crowd this whole picture before he sang it; very funny. Then they played "Angry," "Mad Season" (in which Kyle did a whole cool guitar solo), "Real World" (which Rob said was about being anything you wanted to be if just for a day), "If You're Gone" (Rob rubbed Kyles head when he hit the high note, SO cute!), "Lonely Weekend" (Sun records cover, a song from the 50's which they were going to record the next day in Memphis), and "Back 2 Good" (again Rob does a 5 minute speech drawing a picture for the audience how it's about looking for your soulmate in a bar when the bartender screams "Last Call!" LOL).
After Back 2 Good, they cleared the stage and of course waited for the audience to beg them back on. Rob comes back on alone with his guitar and does "Time After Time" in which Kyle joins him for some backup vocals. Simply amazing. I love when they do this song! It was so funny; after finishing Rob says "That was a song I wrote back in 1983 ::cough cough::" LOL!
Then they played "Push", and then "Black and White People" which again they break down in the middle and Rob talks to the audience. And that was the end of the show. = ( Paul walked up to the stage edge and was throwing out his drumsticks when Rob runs behind him and grabs him in a bear hug, picking him up off his feet. Paul turned around like he was ready to fight! SO cute! It was an awesome, awesome, awesome show. Rob was obviously in a very good mood and very talkative. This is just simply an amazing band.
