(CNN) -- Ringing guitars and unforgiving lyrics about people whose lives are coming apart are the primary ingredients in the recipe that made Matchbox 20 one of the most incendiary bands of 1998. Their debut album, "Yourself Or Someone Like You," has spawned four hit singles, and is currently number one in Australia.

"I'd like to say that everything is going so well because (fans) like our songs and because they attach themselves to something in it, and what's going on in their lives and the things that they're going through," says Matchbox 20's lead singer Rob Thomas. "But you never know," he admits. "Some people like us because they think we're cute, some people like the songs, or we remind them of someone else. You never know why and you can't question it. You just have to kind of go with it and say, 'Thanks, I'm glad it's happening.'"
